Increased Home Values
"The quality of schools directly impacts the vitality and viability of neighborhoods. Selling homes, in large part, means selling good schools."
- Wisconsin Realtors Association, 2000
Quality education boosts home values in neighborhoods and communities. For example, a $1 increase in per-pupil state aid to education increases aggregate per-pupil housing values by $20. (Source: Rouse and Barrow, 2003.)
According to the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia (1998), homebuyers favor neighborhoods that have higher per-pupil expenditures than other similar neighborhoods. In addition, according to the National Tax Journal (1997), "Homes in school districts with higher taxes are in fact worth more." It went on to report that additional annual taxes of $350 to $900 yielded an increase in home values of anywhere from $5,000 to $12,000.
